KIOST signs technology transfer agreement for

“System for the Remediation of Contaminated Underwater Sediment”

The Republic of Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST, President Hong Gi-hoon) announced that, on October 27, 2015, it held a ceremony with H-Plus Eco Ltd., (CEO Shin Sik-woo) to sign a technology transfer agreement regarding its “System for the Remediation of Contaminated Underwater Sediment.”

 

This technology was developed through a research project titled “Development of Sustainable Remediation Technology for Contaminated Marine Sediment: Coating and On-site Processing Technology ” that was pursued with the support of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries. It is a core modulation technology that remediates contaminated underwater sediment located on land or coastal areas that has adverse effects on the environment and ecosystems while simultaneously processing any by-products created during the remediation process into bioactive substances that can then used as materials for landfills or ground composition. It is believed that this technology will secure the cost-effectiveness of underwater sediment remediation projects.

 

The System for the Remediation of Contaminated Underwater Sediment can also be applied to land-based sediment and is significant in that it is a core technology capable of establishing a foundation for the advancement of Republic of Korea’s marine industry into the environmental industry and related markets of overseas countries. Furthermore, the modules that make up the system are easily separated, transported, and reconnected, and can be deployed not only directly into bodies of water but also on barges.

 

KIOST Senior Researcher Kim Kyung-ryun said, “This core technology integrates particle separation and washing technologies, which are necessary for the remediation of contaminated sediment, into a single process and optimizes the use of the processed materials and by-products for a variety of applications.”
