“Nurture your Dream for a Nobel Prize with KIOST”

 - KIOST to hold a lecture by Professor Roger D. Kornberg of Stanford University, a Nobel laureate -

□ A world-renowned scholar who won a Nobel Prize will give a special lecture at the Republic of Korea Institute of Ocean Science & Technology (KIOST), inspiring the dreams and hopes of the next generation of young scientists.

○ KIOST will present the lecture by Professor Roger D. Kornberg of Stanford University at its headquarters in Ansan, Gyeonggi-do, on November 1.

□ Professor Kornberg is a world-renowned scientist who won the Nobel Prize in chemistry in 2006 for his studies of the molecular basis of eukaryotic tranxss-scription.

○ Professor Kornberg was invited to Konkuk University in Seoul as erudite professor in 2007, and since then he has participated in the university’s Global Lab and World Class University (WCU) project. He is also an advisor to the Institute for Basic Science in Daejeon.

□ Professor Kornberg will give a lecture entitled “My Road Leading up to the Nobel Prize” before some 300 aspiring science students from Dongsan Christian High School in Ansan, Hanseong High school in Seoul, and Onyang High School in Asan.

○ The lecture will be followed by a question-and-answer session. After the lecture, students will be able to take pictures with the Nobel laureate and get his autograph.

□ This special lecture has been arranged thanks to a special relationship between Professor Kornberg and KIOST.

○ Structural biology, which is Professor Kornberg’s major, explores living organisms based on information on the third type of structure found in proteins. It is a core field in bioscience and has produced seven Nobel Prize winners in chemistry over the last 10 years or so.

○ KOIST has been actively conducting structural biological research on the proteins in marine organisms. It was in the course of pursuing outside cooperation for research into proteins that control gene expression?a primary subject of research of the KOIST Structural Biology Team?that arrangements were made for Professor Kornberg to give a special lecture.

□ KOIST continuously strives to help the youth and the general public become more familiar with marine science. It has organized the lecture by Professor Kornberg to inspire young students and to nurture their dreams of becoming scientists.
