KORDI's Biodiesel Laboratory receives "Good Practice Award" at the 2011 BIM AWARDS
The Microalgae Biodiesel Laboratory of the Republic of Korea Ocean Research & Development Institute (President, Kang, Jeung-geuk) received the "Good Practice Award" in the Design category at the 2011 BIM (Building Information Modeling) Awards hosted by the Smart Building Association corporation.
A construction official at DA Group (Inc.), an architectural comprehensive engineering firm, revealed that the awardees are selected based on a recognition of their contributions to the design and construction of top-notch green research facilities, through a comprehensive investigation of facility space, environmental analysis, and consultation with researchers, while considering the characteristics of a mass facility for researching new renewable energy production, giving the highest priority to abundant solar light. The facilities were highly praised for their empirical research fusing BIM IT technology with the values of facilities for BT (alternative energies) and ET (environmental sector), which are R&D technologies currently designated for development by the government.
The Republic of Korea Ocean Research & Development Institute's Microalgae Biodiesel Laboratory, the construction of which was completed last March in Ansan, boasts a total floor area of 173.48 ㎡ and a maximum height of 5.85m, with a steel and glass exterior. The interior is equipped with two 20-ton tanks, and extraction facilities for culturing mass quantities of microalgae.
This facility conducts empirical studies on microalgae cultivated and photosythesized in fresh, brackish and sea water, from which biodiesel is extracted and made available for use. Last June, it concluded contracts for co-research projects with Lotte Engineering & Construction, Aekyung Oil Painting, and Honam Petrochemical Co., to promote joint empirical studies on production processes such as microalgae cultivation, bio-fuels and functional materials.
The Republic of Korea Ocean Research & Development Institute's Kang, Do-Hyeung (PhD) (principal researcher), remarked that "After securing the nation's first large biomass production facility, we've now received an award for excellence in the field of micro-algae biofuel facilities. We hope to become a model for future low-cost, high-efficiency facilities for the commercialization of bio-diesel facilities."
Hosted by the Building Smart Association (Co) BIM Awards Steering Committee, the BIM AWARDS recognizes groups (Public owners, builders, designers, engineering companies, etc.) that have contributed to the vitalization of BIM in the design field in Korea, through which it aims to promote the development and economic competitiveness of Korea's construction industry by encouraging the proper utilization and diffusion of BIM technology.
